The Treachery of Modulok! is a 1985 Masters of the Universe mini-comic. No author or artist is credited, but the pencils are Larry Houston’s work. Here, Modulok enlists Hordak to implement his plan to get inside Castle Grayskull and steal a weapon and can get revenge on Skeletor.
After the previous Horde comics, this one is refreshing, both because it’s a nice change of pace and because the story actually makes sense. It’s kind of funny to think, though, that the only reason Modulok needs Hordak’s help is because he can’t mail himself out in all those boxes.
As the cover indicates, this comic has the misfortune of featuring Thunder Punch He-Man, one of the several dumb-looking and completely unnecessary variants the toy line featured. A toy that uses percussion caps is well and good, but this new “power” doesn’t translate meaningfully to the story.
Houston’s art is fine, as usual, although the “Forbidden Weapon” looks suspiciously like an iron, and the Thunder Punch He-Man chest plate, which on the toy has the exact same stylized H as Battle Armor He-Man, looks like a giant Honda emblem here. Another thing: it isn’t Houston’s fault, but on the first page, Modulok’s spare legs and pelvis are talking.
Okay, it’s not the greatest mini-comic, but at this point, I may just be rewarding coherence to some extent, and this is better than anything we’ve seen in a while.
